Sony has confirmed that new PlayStation games will stop getting physical disc releases from January 2028, marking another major shift away from physical media. In a blog post, Sony Interactive Entertainment said physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued from that date. After that, new games will be sold through the PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats only.
For anyone who still likes buying boxed games, collecting discs or trading in older titles, this is a pretty big blow. Physical games have already been under pressure for years, but Sony’s decision gives the shift to digital a much clearer deadline.
Sony says the change will not affect games that have already been released on disc, or games that are still scheduled to launch physically before January 2028. This is to say that existing PlayStation discs are not suddenly going away.

The bigger question is what this means for the next generation of PlayStation hardware. Sony has not announced the PS6 yet, but the timing will naturally lead to speculation that the next console could be built around digital games first.
Sony has already been moving in this direction for a while. The PS5 Pro already launched without a built-in disc drive, forcing players who wanted disc support to buy a separate accessory. That made Sony’s direction look quite clear even before this announcement.
Sony says the decision reflects changing consumer habits, with more players choosing digital media over physical discs. That may be true, but it will not make the news easier for collectors or anyone who prefers owning games in a format they can keep on a shelf.
Physical media is not dead yet, but for PlayStation fans, the window for new disc-based releases is now officially closing.
