Seiko has created one of the most unusual mechanical watches it has ever made, and you will not be able to buy it. The new Seiko Star Time is a one-of-one watch made for baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani, designed to track up to one million hours on a single dial.
Ohtani’s own view of time helped shape the idea behind the watch. According to Seiko, development began after the athlete reflected on how much time he still had left in his baseball career. Seiko turned that question into a mechanical watch that looks far beyond the usual hours, minutes, and calendar displays.
The Star Time uses five stacked discs to show time on a much larger scale than a normal mechanical watch. The centre disc works as a 24-hour dial for the current time. Moving outward, the other discs track 1,000 hours, 10,000 hours, 100,000 hours and finally 1,000,000 hours.
Reaching one million hours gives the watch a much bigger sense of time beyond a regular dial. The figure equals just over 114 years, turning Star Time into a reflection on a lifetime instead of a simple timekeeping instrument. Seiko says the discs move so slowly that their motion is almost impossible to notice in real time, much like stars moving across the night sky.
A star theme also runs through the dial design. Each disc is set with a diamond, while the centre diamond represents the North Star. For Seiko, that detail is meant to reflect Ohtani’s focus on a fixed goal and his steady pursuit of it.
Seiko builds the case from High-Intensity Titanium, with a 42mm width, and a 17mm thickness. It also has a blue ceramic bezel, a box-shaped sapphire crystal, a fitted silicone strap and 100 metres of water resistance.
Because Star Time was made only for Ohtani, it is not being positioned as a production model. Seiko created just one example, presenting it to the baseball star to mark his 10th anniversary as a Seiko brand ambassador in Japan.
With only one example made, Star Time is more of a technical statement than a commercial release. It shows what Seiko can do when it builds something without the usual limits of price, scale, or mass production.
